CKLW Weekly Survey
October 28, 1969

Pat's first big gig, on 50,000 watt CKLW "The Big 8", reaching four Provinces and 28 states with its massive signal. Starting in 1969, at the age of 18, Pat joined "CK" doing three DJ shows a week, three days working in the 20/20 newsroom, and doing part-time booth announcing on CKLW-TV Channel 9. What a start! More to come on this page from (at the time) Detroit's number one radio station, broadcasting from right across the river in Windsor, Ontario.

Pat St.John featured in newly released documentary :

RADIO REVOLUTION
The Rise and Fall of The Big 8

This was the Radio Station that gave Pat his first "big break", and what a way to start, on what was the biggest, most powerful radio station around. 50,000 watts of radio power on the AM dial beaming its signal to 62 million listeners all across the United States and Canada. CKLW "The Big 8" was the most powerful force in the music business, and at the age of just barely 18, Pat became the youngest DJ to have ever worked there.

Over 35 years since Pat was on the air there, people still come up to him and tell them they remember listening to him at "CK". A dream come true for Pat, as it was really his "hometown station" (Having been born in The Motor City and grew up in the Detroit area, (The Big 8 was right across the river in Windsor, Ontario), this riveting story for any fan of great radio and music is a must- watch, just to see how massively powerful and influential this station really was.

Hundreds of rock stars, industry heavyweights, and all the fortunate air personalities and newspersons who were privileged enough to be hired there tell the story of its rise to the absolute top of the heap in radio, to its ultimate demise due to the changes we all know about in the broadcasting business, the interference from the Canadian government, and the introduction of too many consultants or "too many cooks spoiling the broth"!

This is the story of legendary CKLW, and Pat is just one of the many who's input was sought after by the producers to make this movie as complete as it could be given the time restraints of a motion picture.
